Most Purchased Bed Pillows

There are many types of pillows out in the market and that’s because one type of pillow cannot fit everyone. The pillows you pick depend on your favourite sleep posture. For example, a stomach sleeper would require a thin pillow so as not to add strain to your lower back.

Sleeping pillows in Singapore come in different shapes and sizes (e.g. contour shape, traditional shape), but a typical pillow size is a rectangular shape of 70cm wide, 40cm deep, and 20cm high. Interestingly, this is somewhat different to a standard European size pillow which is more of a square shape (65cm wide, 65cm deep).

In this post, we share with you the most purchased bed pillows in the market.

What is the best bed pillow in the market?

1. Memory Foam

This is a favourite for those suffering shoulder and neck pain. Memory foam was first developed by NASA to protect astronauts during space travel. It is a good choice for those with upper body stiffness and shoulder trouble because it moulds itself to the contours of the head and supports the neck during sleep.

Memory foam supports side or back sleepers and is suitable for those with allergies because it is hypoallergenic. But some people may find memory foam too hot and too firm and sometimes comes with an unpleasant odor for the first few days of use.

2. Latex Pillow

Latex filling in pillows comes from rubber trees and is naturally antimicrobial. Latex pillows are firm, cushiony and bouncy. Like memory foam, it supports those with aches and pains in the upper body. Latex pillows hold its loft without flattening when you place your head’s weight on it. Also, latex is durable and does not trap heat like memory foam does.

Latex is however, one of the more expensive pillow fills and is also heavy and not machine washable unlike memory foam. Some may dislike the bouncy feel of latex.

3. Buckwheat Hulls

Buckwheat hull pillows feel like a beanbag and can be easily adjusted shape wise. It is very popular in Asia because you can change it to suit any sleeping position. Buckwheat hulls are also excellent for people with neck, shoulder or upper back pain.

What’s more, the hulls do not hold heat and users can add or remove hulls to adjust the firmness and loft of the pillow. However, buckwheat hulls can be heavy and the hulls make sounds with movement and it can annoy some people. It also isn’t machine washable.

4. Contour Pillows

Contour pillows are highly recommended by chiropractors for those with neck and back pain. The two different “hills” of a contour pillow helps to align the spine and relieves pressure on the neck.

The two “hills” of a contour pillow are of different heights and the sleeper can make a choice between the two - whichever provides better sleep. But this isn’t a pillow for sleepers who sleep on their stomach. However, you are unable to adjust the two heights of the “hills” and some people find it hard to adjust to it.

5. Polyester Pillows

Polyester is the most common synthetic fill for pillows. Although it is soft and you can cuddle with it, it does not give extra support for the neck or upper back. It’s also inexpensive and machine-washable, very easy to care for.

The support of a polyester pillow is moderate and works for back sleepers and as a backrest for resting against the headboard. But those who like firm support will not pick polyester pillows because it sinks over time and can become lumpy.

6. Goose Down Pillows

Goose down pillows is the luxurious choice for sleepers who love lightweight and mold-able pillows that can adjust to any sleeping position. Although some people purchase duck feather fills due to its friendlier price compared to goose down pillows, the quill could poke through the pillowcase and make it uncomfortable for the sleeper.

Down pillows are soft and very light and they are warm and not hot. It is great for stomach sleepers and anyone who prefers a softer pillow with less loft. However if you suffer from allergies, this is obviously not the pillow for you. Down also does not give support to the neck and might not be so comfortable for side or back sleepers. Those with neck or upper back pain would avoid goose down pillows.

7. Microfiber

The new kid on the block, microfibre aims to combine the best of all the other kinds of pillow. They're soft and fluffy like feather, don't clump, don't trap perspiration or moisture, and aim to keep cool through the night. However, microfibre is also the most expensive pillow lining, so you generally tend to find these pillows are bulked out with memory foam or feathers too.
