Some of us may be confused that we can choose between fitted bed sheets and flat bed sheets. What is a fitted bed sheet? A fitted bed sheet is fitted with stretchy elastic bands at the four corners and sewn into the seam of the fabric. The elastic bands hug the corners of your mattress so that it can stay in place while you move naturally on your bed during slumber.

Flat bed sheets on the other hand is just a large piece of sheet that you can spread out over your mattress to rest against the surface. It does not have the elastic band in the corners to hug the mattress but only just a stitched seam around the edges to prevent them from unravelling while in use.

Duvet, Quilt or Comforter

Many of us are confused if we should buy a quilt, comforter or a duvet. We have explained the differences between a quilt and comforter. We also shared how you can choose the best duvet for your bed. In this post, we’ll explain briefly what each one is.

A duvet is a bedspread that is usually filled with feather or down with a removable cover. Depending on the filling, duvets weigh differently. A duvet can conveniently cover over your bed - a great idea if you do not like to make your bed in the mornings. It provides an extra layer of warmth.

A comforter is an easy to use layer that sits on top of the mattress. It functions similarly to a duvet to keep you warm and to cover your bed and is usually filled with microfibre. A quilt consists of three layers - two layers of fabric with batting in between stitched together with a decorative design. A quilt is thinner than a duvet or comforter but it is denser and can feel heavier. Quilts can be used to layer over the duvet or under a duvet cover.

Wondering what are pillow shams? They originated in the 1700s, when pillow cases with removable decorative fronts came into fashion and were labeled “shams”. Pillowcases are usually open at one end and made of a simple sheet fabric. Pillow shams are made of fancier materials that match or compliment your duvet and closes with an overlapping length of fabric. Pillow shams are meant to decorate your bed and placed in front or on top of your sleeping pillows. They can shield your pillowcases from dirt and dust and provide support when you are reading or sitting up in your bed. If you want to, you can sleep on pillow shams as well. There is no hard and fast rule to what you choose to sleep on!
